Today every very landmass on Earth is populated by human beings, but it wasn't always. Our species did not exist about a half a million years ago. Which is weird to think, but the first of our species lived in small tribes, called gather-hunters, where they all depended on each other. The first type of human history is called the "Paleolithic" era. The word Paleolithic really means "old stone age" but it really just refers to the gathering-hunting way of life. The gathering-hunting life style was the way of life before agriculture came around. Gathering was about 70% of the peoples food intake and hunting was about 30% of the food intake. Thats why Strayer says gatherer-hunter because gathering was much more significant than hunting was. During the Paleolithic period they didn't care what gender you were, all they cared about was if you were good at your job or not. If you were a female and wanted to hunt you were allowed too as long as you were good at what you were doing, and vise versa if you were a male and wanted to be a gatherer you would be able too as long as you were good at what you were really trying to do. In 2014, almost all of the worlds 7.2 billion people lived from the food grown on farms and gardens and from domesticated animals raised for their meat, milk, or eggs. Before 11,000 years ago, no one was able to survive in this fashion. This food producing revolution marks the single most significant and enduring transformation of the human condition and of human relationships. The entire period from the beginning of the agricultural revolution to the Industrial revolution is too be considered as the age of agriculture.
